  1. In this episode, Jonathan and Mark take a vacation from interviewing hammock hangers and instead revisit some of the gear from previous episodes as well as some of the stuff they always bring and some stuff they probably won’t bring again. Show Notes: The kickstarter for the Shel was at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1848332970/the-shel-the-ultralight-hammock-shelter-for-all-se and you can see the final results there. The Tentsile Connect, their 2-person tree tent, can be seen here: https://www.tentsile.com/products/connect-tree-tent. Jonathan actually has their older 2-person tent, the Flite, which has a similar footprint but a different setup for the poles and fly. 2. In a marked contrast to yesterday’s show, this one is a little bit of a doom and gloom episode, with those earlier doubts all coming back to haunt me as I come down with an infection. The trail is an extended lesson in life that will test you throughout. I may be near the end but I’m as susceptible to self-doubt as much as anybody. Seeking sunshine in my cloudy mood, I discover true trail angels and the meaning of real trail magic. If nothing else, that discovery has made the past few days worthwhile. 3. With four days of glorious weather forecast, we couldn’t wait to get stuck into Franconia Ridge and the Presidential Range, highlighted by summiting Mt Washington. We were entertained in a log cabin, driven down, then back up Mt Washington, and experienced the area exactly how I think it should be experienced. This episode has me at my peak on this trip. Join me again tomorrow as I tell you about my unexpected, yet rapid, decline. The post Episode #173 – Appalachian Trail (Days 149 to 152) appeared first on Mighty Blue on The Appalachian Trail. 4. It’s no secret: the more physically prepared you are for a backpacking trip, the more you are going to enjoy yourself. But what are the most effective ways to reach optimal backpacking condition? That’s the topic of today’s BPL SKILLS SHORT: training. After a brief introduction, Ryan and Andrew get right to it - covering some basics like living at sea level, training on stable vs. uneven ground, and trail vs. road running. After that they talk about cycling, stabilizing muscles, core strength, upper body resistance training, nutrition, flexibility, injury and foot care, and body weight maintenance. At the end of the pod, Ryan gives his suggestions for a very basic backpacking training plan. If you are interested in a more in-depth training episode of the Backpacking Light podcast, let us know at [email protected]. There’s so much more to dig in to! 5. With Cushy back in the fold, we’re finding more ways to do this hike. Having done Moosilauke, we had to fill in our ten-mile gap AFTER the British Open. We worked it out. Then, most surprising to me, Kinsman blew me away. What a blast. We also had the chance to meet the Wander Women and a terrific young man who played guitar for us. 7. We’re in New Hampshire and starting to put together our highlight reel. We’ve also run into an old friend and teamed up again. The trail has already lived up to expectations, something that I was concerned wouldn’t happen for me the second time around. One more thing. I’ve added to my falls collection! 8. Trigger and I have been separated and are now reunited. I definitely hike better with him! Vermont has been great training for our upcoming adventures in the Whites and beyond. In this episode, we also chat with a SOBO hiker, a “hidden” hostel owner, and discuss giardia with a young woman who plaited the SOBOer’s hair. Only on the Appalachian Trail! 9. Vermont has provided us with mud, mozzies, and views from the top of mountains. We’ve been hiking for 20 straight days and I took the decision to take a zero, splitting with Trigger for about four days. We’ll get back together on Sunday. Vermont has warmed us up for the adventures in New Hampshire and Maine, so I’m sure I’ll one day be grateful for these extra climbs!! 10. We’ve had visitors this week. One had a shirt for me while Trigger’s boys drove 16 hours to hike seven miles with us. The heat in New England has been stifling and certainly took a toll on us. However, the further north we go, the cooler the temperatures should be. No more immediate visitors so we have an opportunity to put in more good miles in the coming days. 12. Still pushing on and now into Massachusetts and past 1550 miles. We’re managing our reduced mileage and taking several breaks during the day is helping us conserve our energy. I’ve now lost about 35 lbs while Trigger has dropped over 40 lbs. The post Episode #167 – Appalachian Trail (Days 123 to 126) appeared first on Mighty Blue on The Appalachian Trail. 13. In this episode, Jonathan and Mark chat with another hiking dad, Tim Watson, who spends his time documenting his experiences hiking and cycling on YouTube when he’s not spending time with his family. After some friendly banter about not using an underquilt (spoiler alert), there is some interesting discussion about Tim’s gear and then his Ramen Bomb. Finally, everyone finishes up with a quick comment about their hygiene kits. After the interview with Tim, Jonathan and Mark chat about powering their gadgets on the trail, and we finish up the podcast with Spiguyver answering a couple of great questions on the “Hanging Out” segment. 14. Tired of sacrificing comfort for a low base weight? So is Doug Johnson, a longtime BPL author on a multi-year quest to discover a luxurious-but-ultralight backcountry experience. Doug has treated himself (and his family) to extensive cook systems, thick sleeping pads, and cozy hammocks - now he’s turned his expert eye to the world of ultralight backcountry seating. It’s a fascinating gear category, and one with wildly different approaches to solving what appears to be a simple problem - how to sit comfortably at the end of a long day. Andrew and Doug get things started by setting some parameters - no sit pads allowed in this podcast (or stools, or hammocks, or...well...just give it a listen, you’ll catch on). Next, they jump into a few of the categories covered by Doug’s extensive Gear Guide: Inflatable Seat Kits, On-Ground Pole Supported Seats, Suspended Seats, and Frame Seats (among others). Doug touches briefly on the design elements and performance considerations of each category, then elaborates on some of his favorites seats in each category. He finishes by choosing his two favorite seats before taking a brief sidetrack into the hammock world. As they wrap up, Andrew challenges Doug to make a believer out of any die-hard gram counters that might be listening. 15. With two-thirds of the trail under our feet, the humidity and heat has cranked up to shorten our days. We still aim to finish in the last week of August, but we can see a tougher profile ahead. These past few days have been impacted by, particularly, the humidity and we’ve come to terms that those 20-milers are a thing of the past. That said, we’ve been blessed by friends, new and old. 16. I had a brief day of doubt this week as my body appeared to rebel about the miles I was doing. I soon got over it but even wondered if Lyme Disease was a possibility. I also got the great chance to meet face to face with our very own Dr Lynne, as well as her husband, Bob, and a listener, Eric Gross Jr. Rain slowed us a little last week but the weather is looking good for the coming days. 18. We’ve been incredibly lucky with our management of rain so far but, as with all things, this, too, shall end. The rain is upon us and making the New York rocks slicker and far more dangerous. We have a quandary, in that there are blue-blazes to avoid the rocks but we want to stick with the white blazes as long as we possibly can. This purist streak may well be tested soon. 19. View the full article
  20. Old friends reunited and new friends met. The trail continues to provide us with serendipitous moments that are the real Trail Magic. Sharing the trail with Trigger, Dodger Dog, Cushy, and a new friend, Barb, has been a delight. I’m fulfilling my desire to watch the last round of each of the Major Golf Championships and zeroing for that purpose today. We’ll be back at it tomorrow. Here we come New York. 21. Pennsylvania has claimed another couple of victims; Trigger and I are VERY glad that it is over. Our feet and shoes have suffered from the sharpness of the rocks and, now that we have entered New Jersey, we were hoping that the rocks were going to improve. Our verdict so far; better but still rocky. The post Episode #162 – Appalachian Trail (Days 106 to 108) appeared first on Mighty Blue on The Appalachian Trail. View the full article

  23. Rocks, rocks, and more rocks have made our days tougher but, somewhat perversely, longer and further. We’re taking a zero right now but have racked up an average of almost 20 miles a day for over a week. Two more days and we’ll be out of Pennsylvania and into New Jersey, state #8. 24. Just two days today, with a 35-mile hike into the precipitous descent into Port Clinton. Trigger and I are still together and, as you can see, he has reached for his bug net to keep the flies and mozzies at bay and away from his face. We meet a French Canadian hiker who is taking a novel journey back home and respond to an email from a listener who is concerned at the vitriol on Facebook. As you’d imagine, I have an opinion.
